Industry Recognition

The courses in our SiS library are provided by our co-founder SWIFT Learning. These course certificates are widely used and accepted by industry. Not only are SiS students that complete these HSE courses armed with the proper training to stay safe, but including these certificates on their resume gives them a leg up!

Alberta OH&S Awareness

This three hour course was developed by SWIFT Learning and well-known, highly respected industry professionals.

The Occupational Health and Safety legislation is law and all employers are legally bound to abide by its requirements. Changes to Alberta’s occupational health and safety legislation came into force on June 1, 2018 that created an improved OHS system to better protect workers and ensure they have the same rights as other Canadians.

The legislation provides a framework for employers to operate their businesses and protect employees from injury, illness, and harm. The framework is quite detailed, and employees need to take time to understand the mechanics of the legislation and how they can meet their responsibilities under the legislation in their work.

This course is intended to make you aware of both the employer and the employee’s responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Act, Regulation and Code and the new Act which came into force on June 1, 2018.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe the responsibilities of workers, supervisors, and managers under the legislation
  • Describe the requirements for communication
  • Identify the requirements for hazard assessment and emergency response planning that are listed in the Code
  • Recognize requirements regarding first aid and workplace violence that are listed in the Code
  • Identify and explain parts of the OH&S Code and new ACT changes relevant to employees and contractors
  • Describe the new ACT basic rights of workers

Asbestos Awareness

This two hour course was developed by SWIFT Learning and well-known, highly respected industry professionals.

Asbestos is a fibrous material used in many industrial applications. Unfortunately, asbestos is also a dangerous substance that increases the risk of lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis. In this course, you will be presented with information on asbestos-related hazards, PPE requirements, air monitoring methods, and abatement methods for different risk levels. This course will help you meet all regulatory and government requirements including Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, Section 1 and Code, Part 4.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify the health risks associated with asbestos

Bear Safety Awareness

This one hour course was developed by SWIFT Learning and well-known, highly respected industry professionals.

If you are working in the North American wilderness, there is a possibility that you may encounter a bear. Seeing a bear in the wild can be exciting, but bears can be very dangerous if you do not know how to react. This course will help you learn about bears and how best to respect them in their natural habitat. This will help to ensure your safety as you work in bear country. This course has been designed to help you meet all regulatory and government requirements including the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Distinguish between black bears and grizzly bears
  • Explain the feeding habits of bears
  • Explain how you can tell if there is a bear in the area

Benzene Awareness

Benzene occurs naturally and can be manufactured. Natural sources of benzene include volcanoes and forest fires. Benzene is also a natural part of crude oil, gasoline, and cigarette smoke. Benzene awareness is important because benzene can cause cancer and, in high levels of exposure, death. This course has been designed to help you meet all regulatory and government requirements including the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code.

This is a one-hour online course.

Bullying Prevention 4 Administrators

Understanding and dispelling myths surrounding bullying and peer mistreatment will help you to build and implement effective bullying prevention program.

This is a two hour course.

  • Use effective strategies to reduce mistreatment and increase helpful behaviours,
  • Help mistreated youth to change,
  • Build resiliency for all,
  • Support youth who are mistreated, and

Bullying Prevention 4 Youth

SWIFT Learning developed this important course working closely with industry expert Stan Davis. Stan has worked as a social worker, child and family therapist, and trained Child Protective Workers. He designed and implemented training for a network of rape crisis centers and collaborated with police to develop effective interventions for domestic abuse. Since the mid-1990s he has been featured in newspaper, radio, and TV articles and on a special 20/20 report on bullying with John Stossel. He is the author of several books and has presented keynotes and workshops at conferences and trained school staff and students in 25 US states, in Canada, in India, and in Africa.

Earlier research on interventions focused on a distinction between bullying and peer conflict. There have been many attempts to differentiate between these two types of behavior. Most definitions of bullying focus on the aggressor’s intent to harm, on repetition, and on a difference in status of power between the two parties. Many people in this field now question whether we can ever tell what someone intends or whether we can be sure there is a power differential. More importantly, we know that harm can be done even if no harm is intended – or that harm can be done by people of equal status to us. Thus, in this course, we will focus on actions by peers which have the potential to do harm, rather than just on “bullying” behaviors. We will call those actions: “Peer Mistreatments.”

This is a two-hour online course.

Cold Stress Awareness

This one hour course was developed by SWIFT Learning and well-known, highly respected industry professionals.

In many different industries there are jobs that are undertaken in cold environments, which can lead to frostbite, hypothermia, and even death. This course includes information on types of cold stress, symptoms, treatment, and controls and strategies for managing cold stress. This course has been designed to help you meet all regulatory and government requirements including the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify the elements of cold stress
  • Recognize the hazards and health risks associated with work in cold environments
  • Understand wind chill factors and how cold stress may be measured in the workplace

Critical Incident Investigation

This two hour course was developed by SWIFT Learning and well-known, highly respected industry professionals.

All incidents have causes. If the causes are not identified and eliminated, the same type of incident may occur again. However, there are often four, five, or more root causes of an incident. In an investigation, you must identify as many of these causes as possible. It is important that all incidents are reported and investigated in a consistent way, as this will make analysis much easier. This course has been designed to help you meet all regulatory and government requirements including the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Provide accurate and detailed information on incidents for analysis and reference
  • Compile statistical data on the cost of incidents
  • Identify the direct and indirect causes of incidents

Cyberbullying & Digital Citizenship

This two hour course was developed by SWIFT Learning and well-known, highly respected subject matter experts.

This course has been designed for anyone – parents, teachers and youth alike and uses the term “online mistreatment” when referring to “cyberbullying”.

Online peer mistreatment is something that we cannot eradicate, however as with all peer mistreatment we can assist the one being hurt, we can help prevent, we can reduce the harm and hopefully we can reduce the number of students who are doing the harm.

We are all, both young and old, navigating a new digital culture. Rules and social norms are often ambiguous. It is our social responsibility to understand, take ownership and, personal responsibility for ourselves and those around us so that we can all stay safe.

We can mitigate the risks by making responsible and ethical decisions in the online world by developing a strong sense of “digital citizenship”.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Recognize cyberbullying and online mistreatment
  • Identify a cyber bully, what they do and who they affect
  • Identify the technologies used to mistreat online

Digger’s Guide to Safe Bone Burying

This 1/2 hour online program was developed by the Safety in Schools team in partnership with the Alberta Common Ground Alliance (ABCGA).

This online, interactive activity was designed to introduce elementary school aged children to the basic concepts of safe digging and the need to CALL or CLICK before you dig.

This is a publicly available resource and can be accessed from our Resource Portal without a Safety in Schools account. Thank you to Alberta Labour for funding this program through the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Innovation and Engagement Grant.

Distractions & Proactive Driver Training

This one hour course was developed by SWIFT Learning and well-known, highly respected industry professionals.

In the past, courses such as this have been called “Defensive” driving courses. More recently, they have appeared as “Pro-active” driving courses. The purpose of this change in terminology is to encourage drivers to not only defend themselves against collisions, but be pro-active in avoiding dangerous situations and protecting all road users. This course has been designed to help you meet all regulatory and government requirements including the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify the items on a vehicle that should be inspected before it is driven
  • List the most common driver distractions
  • Describe how to avoid becoming distracted while driving
  • Identify the causes and effects of fatigue

Driver Hours of Service Limits

Hours of Service legislation outlines regulations that commercial vehicle drivers must follow when operating a commercial vehicle in Canada. To ensure that drivers get an adequate amount of sleep to prevent fatigue and fatigue related collisions, these rules have a maximum allowable driving time and minimum required off-duty times for drivers. In this course, you will be presented with information on this legislation, fatigue, driver responsibilities, and log books.

This is a two-hour online course.

Energy Isolation

Energy Isolation is the modern codified term for common lock-out tag-out procedures but has been made more global to include isolation of all energy forms. This course will examine some of the sources and forms that harassment can take as well as identify best practices in terms of how employers should deal with these behaviours.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Define workplace harassment, sexual harassment and violence,
  • Describe some behaviours which would be examples of the above,
  • List the effects of workplace harassment on the individual AND on the company,
  • Know where to find your local legislation related to harassment and violence in the workplace,
  • List the general rights and responsibilities of employers and employees in regards to workplace harassment and violence,
  • Recognize some of the warning signs that may preclude inappropriate behaviour,
  • Recognize the workplace factors that may put employees at greater risk of harassment or violence,
  • Perform a Job Hazard Analysis including harassment and violence as potential hazards,
  • Use SAHARA to perform a hazard risk assessment,
  • Develop and implement a workplace harassment and violence prevention policy and procedures,
  • List the three main categories of workplace harassment and violence prevention and several key factors in each category,
  • List some risk factors and preventative measures especially for lone workers,
  • Report an incident of workplace harassment or violence,
  • Conduct an appropriate investigation of any reported incidents,
  • Implement consequences for harassers and support for victims and/or witnesses,
  • Provide training to employees on what harassment is and how to deal with it,
  • Develop an Emergency Response Plan, and
  • Access additional courses dealing with workplace behaviour.

Workstation Ergonomics

Ergonomics is the science of designing a workspace around the needs of the worker. Designing your workstation, and work flow, using ergonomic principles is essential to help prevent injury, improve productivity, and reduce stress.

Your Rights and Responsibilities at Work

This two hour course was developed by SWIFT Learning and well-known, highly respected industry professionals as part of the original development of the Safety in Schools program.

The provincial and federal governments have many rules that must be followed in the Alberta workplace before you start working, while you are on the job and when you leave your employer. You will find answers to questions about your employment responsibilities and entitlements on the job, including regulations for employment standards such as wages, termination and vacation pay, legislation on human rights and workplace health and safety, and information on privacy.

This course is for workers who want to know more about employment rules in the Alberta workplace. It discusses legislation covering workers, their rights and responsibilities on the job, and leaving the job temporarily or permanently.
