The Safety in Schools Foundation of Canada and the Calgary Fire Department Launch Home Fire Safety App for Students

Calgary, AB — February 22, 2024 — The Safety in Schools (SiS) Foundation of Canada, in collaboration with the Calgary Fire Department (CFD), is proud to announce the official launch of the SAHARA 4 Home Fire Safety app.

The SAHARA 4 Home Fire Safety app is designed to provide students the information they need to assess the risk of fires in their home and mitigate those risks. This free app aims to reach all high school students in Calgary, providing them with a unique tool they can use on their phones to enhance their awareness and knowledge about fire safety.

Deputy Chief Pete Steenaerts of the Calgary Fire Department shared his enthusiasm about the app, stating, “This is a unique app we hope will reach all high school students in Calgary, an audience which has typically been harder to connect with. By leveraging technology they already use, we can give these young adults the information they need to keep them and their families safe.”

Kim Adolphe, CEO of the SiS Foundation, highlighted the app’s alignment with the CALM (Career and Life Management) curriculum, emphasizing its relevance to students’ overall education. “We encourage all teachers to assign it to their students so that together we can all make a positive impact on our communities to improve home fire safety,” Adolphe stated.

The SAHARA 4 Home Fire Safety app is a collaborative effort between SiS and the CFD. SiS provided the educational format and expertise in developing the app, and the CFD provided the fire safety content.
